Facts: In February of 2001, Kimberly Jones, better known as Lil’ Kim’s companions fired more than 20 bullets when she and her entourage were leaving a Manhattan radio station just as a rival rapper and his group were arriving.
After the shootout, not wanting to snitch, Kim told law enforcement and the jury that she didn’t know the people involved in the shooting and that she wasn’t there at the time. She was caught red-handed in her lies when a security camera tape proved that she and her two companions were, in fact, at the scene of the crime. For lying, Kim was convicted on three counts of perjury and one count of conspiracy. In 2005, she was sentenced to one year and one day in jail. Because of her good behavior, she was released from jail after only about ten months, spent thirty days under house arrest, and remained on probation for three years.
Law: A person commits perjury when he intentionally lies while giving testimony under oath. Conspiracy involves an agreement between people to take steps to commit or cover up a crime.
Takeaway: Never lie in court or make plans to hide a crime. Because of the bad decisions she made after the shootout, Lil’ Kim ended up in jail even though she never fired a single bullet. It can be a crime to lie in court or lie to police officers to protect your friends, even if you weren’t the one who did something wrong.
